I had a strict agenda, and new exactly where I had to go and who I had to meet...or so I thought!
Apparently, craigslist isn't always as accurate(or the people on craigslist).
I had a list of Streets & Avenues that I needed to go to...
My 1st stop: Upper East Side! (or so I thought AGAIN)
When I finally realized that the area was not as the pictures and the people didn't look like what I had envisioned, it was too late. I was expecting the upper east side from Gossip Girl. Well, I got the upper east side alright..so upper I got Harlem!
My 2nd stop: East Village!
When I arrived to the old, prewar building, I wasn't surprised at all. It wasn't a dream but it was what seemed to be an average New York City apartment..(or so I thought)!
I met the man from maintenance that quickly showed me to the apartment that was available.
When he knocked on the door, I realized that it was not vacant but as any normal human being would do if you knew they were going to be showing your place...You would clean it!
From the first step into the apartment, I was literally stepping over food, clothes, shoes, gum and anything you can think of. The walls were black and the kitchen smelled like something had died. I wanted to vomit!
To think that someone can actually live in those
condition was appalling and to later find out that a girl occupied one of the rooms was even more shocking!
At the end of the day I was frustrated and tired. I had to succumb to the fact that I was indeed not a New Yorker (yet) and had absolutely no clue where I was going or where I had just been.
I had one more appointment left for the day and at the rate I was going I was not at all excited. This last apartment was Downtown and conveniently located 1 block away from the only 2 souls I knew in New York City. The pictures online looked beautiful, but then again, so did Harlem and the Pigs in the Village.
But I was not giving up and quickly made my way into another cab and headed Downtown.
As I approached the building, I thought I had the wrong address. This looked way to good to be true. A beautiful thirty-something floor building, with a DOORMAN and ELEVATOR (which in this city is a luxury).
Anxiously waiting to meet my potential new room mate..all that could go wrong was that she be a complete psycho!
Little did I know, I had finally stuck gold. She was the sweet girl in her mid-twenties. She has a stable job, well kept and most importantly CLEAN!
At the end of the day, I sacrificed space for a clean and beautiful apartment with a great room mate.
Now that I have a place to call home, I am more excited than ever for this new journey!
Here are a few pictures of my new place!!!
XOX,
O
